Alright-- you can file this one under, "Bad Dog Training Jokes."A guy is driving around the back woods of Tennessee and he sees asign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: "Talking Dog ForSale." He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him thedog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labradorretriever sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, hesays, "So, what's your story?" The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talkwhen I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I toldthe CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country,sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no onefigured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their mostvaluable spies for eight years running." "But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn'tgetting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for ajob at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering nearsuspicious characters andlistening in." "I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch ofmedals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wantsfor the dog. "Ten dollars," the guy says. "Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling himso cheap?" "Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff."

Dog Training -- Have You Taken Action Yet?

Today is the day for you to take action. Whatever your situation and whatever kind of dog you have, act today, Whatever step you decide to take in training your dog, do it today. When tomorrow comes, work with your dog again. It does no good to study and learn and not do anything about it.

It doesn't have to be hard. Start with simple ideas that you have put together and how you are going to get your dog where you want him to be in his dog training.

If you have already done this and are on your way, congratulations and keep up the good work. Your dog will appreciate it and you will love the kind of dog he will become. There are plenty of good ideas on this website to get started and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask as a comment at the end of one of my articles. Puppies are cute cuddly and so full of life throughout the infancy stage. It is at this time when puppy training is vital - because believe it or not these cute cuddly little characters can cause so much havoc in the home - with their outbursts of action packed antics all brought on by excitement.

Fun it may be at the time but when you waken to find the remains of a chewed slipper- scratch marks on the furniture and puppy poo to mark the pup`s presence then it is time for an obedience check

How do you go about house training a puppy - simple the same as you would potty train a baby? Yes your right it will take time and patience but all worthwhile in the end. To be honest the whole process of puppy training can be quite fulfilling as well as fun. There will be times when you may get frustrated throughout the process but just the fact that you have accomplished what others would see as impossible is an achievement in its self. To have an obedient dog standing at the side of its master (you) will make you proud to be the canines owner. Even evening walks are so much more enjoyable with an obedient dog.

You have to think about safety for yourself and that of your pooch if they are not trained. Dangers by the roadside and where children are concerned - have to be a couple of vital factors why puppy training is important. Timing is crucial when puppy training - have a doggie diary with a schedule of times and adhere to them. Work this pattern around what is best suited for you and your dog

For example: 10 to 10:30 am. lead the puppy from the enclosure outside and always keep to the same spot every day. The puppy will get used to this allotted space and in time will make his or her own way there. Remember puppies are like babies they need feeding. Times for this is best after the first morning release - approx about 30 minutes. A little later let the puppy out for a friendly romp in the garden for a play without commands.

Leading the puppy from the kennel is an action you have to repeat over and over again at the scheduled times you have logged in your doggie diary. Before retiring to blanket street take the puppy outside again and let them have a little time to investigate and nosey around - in other words sniffing every nook and cranny. If you are serious with this practice then the puppy`s needs have to be checked again around 3 am in the morning. It is a good idea to have a catchphrase for the pup to relate to. Words like (want to poo poo) will do the trick. When your puppy is at your side and obeying your commands it is then you will know why that famous saying came about - GOOD DOGGIE.

If it does, you need to invest some time into a little bit of basic dog training. Starting to train your dog from a young age is crucial, as the first few months of his life is when you will have the greatest influence on him; this is where he is shaped into the dog he is going to be when he is all grown up.

The most basic of dog training is to get your dog to sit and come. Teaching your dog those commands are essential for him to learn. These commands are used for various different reasons, if you are in competition, if your dog jumps making him sit will immediately get him off, and "come" is the all important one. If you take your dog for a walk, you let him of the leash and you expect him to come back to you, not run around the park with you chasing after him shouting at him to "get here right this instance". That would be just down right embarrassing!

To teach your dog how to come requires only the most basic of techniques but a lot of repetition. The simplest way to get him to come is have a toy in one hand and a treat in the other, when you are in the house simply walk away from him, hold out the toy and excitingly call him to you, when he comes over give him a treat, always use the command for come that you are going to use in the future. Doing this several times a day is a great way to teach him, but remember to have lots of long breaks so he doesn't get bored and stop enjoying it, and don't forget the treats!

Getting him to sit could be a slight bit harder but again only requires basic dog training. When you have mastered the come command call him to you, place your hand on the end of his back and say "sit" while gently pushing down on his backside, when he sits his bottom down give him a treat and a lot of praise. If you want him to sit longer just delay giving him the treat and the praise, get him to sit but take your time bending down to him and feeding him his tidbits.

Basic dog training is simple and very effective. It should also be fun for you and your dog, it does not have to be hours and hours each day just may be 5 minutes or so. Do not forget to reward your dog and yourself for all the "hard" work though!

Sometimes it takes a lot of work and dedication to achieve just one small objective. To make your dog become more familiar with the training, so that your dog can accomplish a fast and productive dog training you will need make all this dog training more than just a 2, or 3 , times per week thing. You will need to make DOG TRAINING part of your daily life. You should try to work with your dog in daily bases, that way your dog will be more and more familiar with the tasks you ask and teach him to achieve. One good thing to remember isyou must make your dog training in short sessions, comparing to those long sessions you would normally have with your dog 3 times a week.

SOME COMMON BEGINNER QUESTIONS

1. What age should I start using the prong collar?

[Adam replies: ] Generally speaking, at about four months of age… when you see the adult teeth begin to come in.

2. What should I be teaching, obedience wise, with 8
month puppy?

[Adam replies: ] At eight months of age, there really isn’t ANYTHING you can’t teach the dog, obedience-wise.

3. When you say pop, when teaching the down command,
do you mean I should pop the prong collar? So for
example if the dog gets up from down/stay position and
walk away, you said to say NO, pop the leash, then say
NO all the way back to manhole, then pop the leash
again? Do you mean to pop the prong or to guide him
into down/stay position?

[Adam replies: ] When I say “pop” I mean to tug on the leash. Make sure you’re starting and ending with slack. So, you say, “No!” then go to the dog and give a pop on the leash, then walk him back to the spot and reissue the “down” command… and then “pop” downward (or to the side) on the leash and put him back into the down position.

5. What's the difference between obedience training and sport training (i.e. Schutzhund)? Why do they say you shouldn't train your dog in obedience if you want him to be in Schutzhund? (I just want to know for my own knowledge)

[Adam replies: ] Schutzhund is a dog sport the incorporates an obedience routine, as well as a protection and tracking routine. The obedience exercises are mostly route exercises, and are not trained in a street-smart context. As for why you supposedly shouldn't train your dog in obedience if you want him to be in Schutzhund… this is a myth. Some macho types will consistently over-correct their dog in the obedience phase… and this will kill drive. But anyone with even a shred of common sense will avoid this predicament.

6. What do you think of raw diets for dogs? Worth it??

[Adam replies: ] Not worth it. Feed the dog a high quality dog food and your dog will be fine.

7. What order should I teach the dog the commands?
(first sit, then down then come?? How should I do it?)

[Adam replies: ] I like to teach the “Walk on a loose leash” exercise first, followed by the curb/street/boundary training, as this teaches the dog what a correction is (if he doesn’t know already). Then you can teach exercises in any order you wish. To be honest, the order of basic exercises is largely irrelevant. It DOES become relevant in later training, when you begin chaining behaviors together, such as “Go to the fridge, open door, retrieve beer, then close door.”

8. To teach the dog to not run out of the house, when
I slam the door I'm afraid it is going slam on him too
hard and hurt him. How do I go about doing it? Do I
shut it softly or will he be fast enough to stop?

[Adam replies: ] You’re thinking too much. Just slam the door shut. Assuming it’s not a toy breed, it’s not going to kill him. If it is a toy breed, keep your hand on the door and guide it shut. The idea is that the door slams on the dog… not to injure the dog, but to be uncomfortable so that he waits and watches you for the “release“ command before walking through. You are the alpha dog. You walk through first. It is your job to make sure it‘s safe for him to leave the property, and he needs to look to you for the “It‘s Okay“ cue. If you don’t give the “A-okay” cue… then bad things could happen. Like the door suddenly slamming shut. Ever sit on a dirty chair and ruin a clean pair of slacks? Once it happens to you, you’ll always check first. It’s the same concept with the dog.

I was reading an article about Tiger Woods and thought of how his dad had trained him to be an excellent golf player. I liken that idea to a pet owner and how important it is for him and his dog to use proper dog training techniques. When training a dog, the owner is investing in his future like Tiger Woods dad did. Following is a small part of that article.

Tiger Woods is making up for lost time at this week's Western Open, working long hours to recapture his swing ahead of the British Open at Hoylake later this month.
The world No.1, playing only his second event since the US Masters in April after taking time off following the death of his father Earl, practised for a combined five and a half hours after his opening two rounds.
"You've got to put in the hours," Woods told reporters after posting five birdies, two bogeys and an eagle in his third-round 66 that lifted him within three shots of leader Vijay Singh heading into Sunday's final round.

Welcome. This is my Dog Training site. I've had many dogs in my life and I loved them all, but I feel I shortchanged them. I didn't know how to train them, so they were not able to reach their full potential.
